উইন্ডোজ সার্ভার হচ্ছে একটি অপারেটিং সিস্টেম ঠিক একই রকম যেমনটি আমরা অ্যাস ইউজিয়াল আমাদের কম্পিউটারে যে ওএস ব্যবহার করি; যেমন ইউন্ডোজ ১০,লিনাক্স ইত্যাদি; আমরা জানি ইউন্ডোজ এর প্রস্তুতকারক হচ্ছে মাইক্রোসফট; ঠিক সার্ভারের প্রস্তুতকারক ও মাইক্রোসফট; মূলত উইন্ডোজ সার্ভার হলো সার্ভার কম্পিউটার ম্যানেজ করার জন্য ইউজ করা হয়ে থাকে; এরমানে প্রায় সকল ক্ষেত্রে উইন্ডোজ সার্ভার এডিশনকে বিজনেস সেটিং এ ইউজ করা হয়;

উইন্ডোজ সার্ভার নাম হলেও এটি দেখতে কিন্তু সাধারণ উইন্ডোজ ভার্সনের মতোই; তৎকালীন সময়ের উইন্ডোজ এর কনজিউমার এর উপরে ভিত্তি করেই উইন্ডোজ সার্ভার ভার্সনের ডিজাইন করা হয়;

যেমন- উইন্ডোজ সার্ভার ২০০৩ আসলে উইন্ডোজ এক্সপি এর সার্ভার ভার্সন ছিল; আর বর্তমানের উইন্ডোজ সার্ভার ২০১৬ এবং ২০১৯ হচ্ছে উইন্ডোজ ১০ এর সার্ভার ভার্সন!

সাধারণ উইন্ডোজ এবং উইন্ডোজ এর সার্ভার ভার্সন সেইম কোডের উপরে তৈরি করা ফলে এরা দুজনেই অনেক একই ফাংশন পারফর্ম করে; এই জন্য নর্মাল উইন্ডোজ আর উইন্ডোজ সার্ভারের স্টার্ট মেন্যু, ট্যাস্কবার, আইকন ইত্যাদি দেখতে সিমিলার;সাথে এই দুই ভার্সনের উইন্ডোজেই একই প্রোগ্রাম যেমন- ব্রাউজার, ফটো এডিটর ইত্যাদি ইন্সটল করে ইউজ করা যায়;
